Characters of the rural architecture of Ariege

One should not seek in the rural architecture of Ariège of the complex forms or ornaments and decorations. The house of Ariege meets the needs by simple volumes: need for shelter for the men and the animals, and for storage of food especially barns with hay in the extensive cattle-rearing areas.
Like any vernacular architecture, it uses local materials, esentiellement the stone drawn from the mountains for the walls, wood for the frames, poplar or oak in low Ariège, frene in the Pyrenees, and little wood in outside except the balconies, doors and windows, or certain boardings of barns to protect the hay from the rain.

whereas the tile channel covers the less sloping roofs of low-Ariège but also of the pre-Pyrenees and the intra-Pyrenean valleys.

The airspace of the slate roofs of the barns and houses of high Couserans is given by this added piece of wood, the coyau, which softens the bottom of slope.
